Altitude, Argentina and the Riverland

Should you be interested in creating a wine empire, The Daily Mail, 17th July, 2011, reports that the Estancia Punta del Agua; a one million acre estate, in San Juan province in western Argentine, is for sale. The estate lies about 150 kilometres NNE, of San Juan which has a wine history back to 1569.

San Juan in turn is 165 kilometres north of the famous wine town of Mendoza. The vineyards around San Juan and Mendoza vary in elevation between 600 to 700 metres and a brief inspection of maps suggests a lot of Punta del Agua is of similar altitude.

Much of the Estancia seems to cover wide, flat river terraces which are ideal for vines. Indeed the lucky owner by planting 400,000 to 500,000 acres could duplicate the production of the entire Australian wine business. The land cost; less than $10.00 an acre.

This part of Argentine has some general similarities to the irrigated Riverland districts of Australia. I use the term Riverland in this comment to apply to vines bordering the two great rivers, the Murrumbidgee and the Murray, and the lower portion of the Darling, all the way through to the mouth. Both regions are arid and with abundant sunshine all that is needed is a supply of water to produce heavy crops. The run-off from the snowy Andes gives the Argentine vineyards all the water they need. This suitability for low cost, broad acre irrigation farming, allows them to produce well priced, beverage wines. This in turn has brought the two countries into competition in the world's markets.

There are also many similarities between the origins of the landscapes of the two regions though I will leave a discussion of this to another time. When I point this similarity out to wine writers and the like, particularly that the Argentinean steppe is no more than an elevated version of the Riverland the idea is met with incredulity. This reaction is an illustration of the 'clouded vision' effect created when you drink wines in the region of origin. Tasting wine in Mendoza and gazing up at the Andes is a far more interesting vista than tasting a wine in Mildura while looking at the muddy Murray and being surrounded by a giant tank farm. At such a moment, the thought of landscape comparisons make no sense and the pre-conceived idea of the 'industrial' nature of Australian Riverland wine consumes any commonsense and the will to listen.

While you can compare the similarities between the two regions I believe there is bad news for Riverland growers as the one dramatic difference of elevation, gives the Argentineans a distinct quality edge over the Australian Riverland. The vast area of the Murray-Murrumbidgee basin is a flat, arid plain and from the mouth shows little elevation rising to 135 metres at Griffith and 150 metres at Albury. When it warms up in the Australian Riverland it stays hot and the grapes undergo minimum cooling in the evening. This alters the final taste, which can be good for reds but is detrimental to white wine flavours.

Argentina with its vast area of flat steppe at heights above 600 metres has for example the cooling benefits of Adelaide Hills without the costs of the steeply sloped vineyards. The future belongs with them.

The point of drawing your attention to the sale of Estancia Punta del Agua is to illustrate how possible it would be for just a decent sized slab of Argentina to make all of the price sensitive wine the world would ever need. How Does Soil and Rocks Influence the Taste of Wine?

My studies have lead me to the conclusion that the chemistry of the soils and rocks in which the vine grows add little if anything to the taste of wine. Wine does not show a taste that can be related back to primary or secondary minerals in the soils and weathered rocks. The soils and rocks do though have an important bearing on how necessary nutrients are taken up by the vines and most specifically how the vine gains access to water. Olivier Gergaud from the University of Reims and Victor Ginsburgh (pictured) of the Université Libre de Bruxelles deserved better than the couple of smart headlines they attracted when they presented a paper at the UK Royal Economic Society annual conference in Nottingham in March this year. The Sunday Observer declared "French bitter over wine study" and Decanter magazine on its website summarised that "Terroir plays no role". But apart from a reference or two on wine web sites that was the extent of the references that I found on Google for the paper Natural endowments, production technologies and the quality of wines in Bordeaux. Does terroir matter? Yet the Gergaud and Ginsburgh paper is one of the more significant contributions yet made to the debate about the comparative impact of terroir and wine making skills on the wine we drink.
