Big Deal Barossans

Three Outstanding Reds Worth Every Penny

In a standard retail store, bearing a well-known label, Barossa reds of this quality would sell for $20 (the REF), and then you would be lucky. And much more under a boutique label. Buying direct from a wine maker-wine merchant brings many benefits. All you need do is pocket the difference. Please note the term REF is the reference price which can be used as a buying tool.

Barossa Valley
Cabernedro 2016

Experiments pay off and the best when of exceptional interest are bottled in tiny amounts.

A blend of two fabulous Barossa varieties, Cabernet and Bonvedro which have clicked to be bigger than the parts.

Exciting wine, tempting, offers a difference, so check the score and price.

Barossa Valley
Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2012

Wonderful complex flavours plus it shows maturation from a great vintage.

Recall this is not a chocolate syrup Shiraz but it is still full, rich, ripe and warm. You do need variety and the Kaldukee while Barossan has the advantage of age.

Single Barrel
Barossa Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Cabernet comes in from different vineyards and the parcels are kept apart. If you make 25 barrels then mysterious alchemy means two or three become standouts for reasons not known.

This is one of two that Benjamin wished to have preserved from the 2016 vintage.

The long curving range of the Adelaidean-Mount Lofty range contains a dozen wine regions of world class importance. Read Part 2.

The Wine Regions of the Adelaidean-Mount Lofty Range Part 2.

The winemaker Benjamin and I like South Australian reds and our long history as retailers has taught us that a large percentage of customers also enjoy the flavours of warm climate reds. The reason back in 2004 we headed to South Australia and while a number of locations would have been suitable settled for the Barossa Valley.

From winery premises on Samuel Road, Nuriootpa, Barossa Valley we make and source wines from the following regions of the Adelaidean Mount Lofty Range-Part 1 last week and this is Part 2.

Region 5. Adelaide Hills. The Mount Lofty ranges to the east of Adelaide peak at 710 metres. Height brings a cooler climate and the numerous market gardens and orchards have since the 1970s shifted to include 4000 hectares of vineyards. A Glug source of cool climate whites.

6. Eden Valley. To the east of the Barossa Valley and a northerly extension of the Adelaide Hills is Eden Valley. Of lower altitude, hotter and drier than the Adelaide Hills. Noted for fine Riesling. Fabulous bargains but we must wait.
7. Reynella, Adelaide Plains and Coastal North. McLaren Vale is a region south of Adelaide next to the beaches. Unless preserved it would disappear in a blink to housing. Housing has consumed Reynella, the coastal land of Adelaide city and is marching north. North of Adelaide is warmer and drier than McLaren vale but excellent wines can still found from Angle Vale and other places.

8. Currency Creek, Goolwa and Hindmarsh Island. This region covers the rolling flat land on the eastern side of the Fleurieu Peninsula (Mount Lofty Ranges) which is south-west of Langhorne Creek.

9. Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. This is the southern extension of the Adelaidean-Mount Lofty Range and cool enough for Pinot Noir. On Kangaroo Island think of Margaret River.

Back to the specials for today which are from the Barossa Valley. In our view the Barossa is the global benchmark for value for money and for $10 to $12 you can acquire remarkable and unique wines. What a gift they are.

30 Day Pricing Guarantee:
After buying wine it is most annoying to find it cheaper shortly afterwards. Currently Ben and I find selling on-line most turbulent. To hold our ground I confess to moving prices around far more than usual. Please notify Nicole or Claire of any upsetting price moves and they will then issue a credit.

Cameron Country
'Red Post'
Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Coonawarra should be part of your drinking pattern. Barossa may be the foundation but interest is retained with the power of cooler climate maritime Cabernet of a type made so famous by Coonawarra. I see fabulous value for money.

Barossa Valley
Shiraz 2015

The 2015 continues a steady line of great Karrawirra’s and those lucky enough to have a vintage sequence are indeed lucky.

We like our reds to show fruit though in this case structure with line and length are most apparent.

Adelaide Hills
Chardonnay 2017

The Knotts will rate highly as one of Benjamin’s great discoveries of 2018.

Impeccable breeding and I am thankful for the small quantity we were able to procure.

Truth again that great things come in small amounts.

This is our longest running mixed dozen because it is the most popular. It provides a balance between expensive varieties and our more general favourites plus provides a saving on buying the dozen bottles separately. A real Glug winner.
