Miracle to Preserve the Difference
Langdorf 'Kaldukee' Barossa Valley Frontignac 2015

Region:Barossa Valley
Heritage varieties, older well established varieties and newly arrived varieties are all part of the Australian vineyard landscape. Perhaps we should add another category being those no longer wanted and now part of history. Judgement, be careful with judgements as how the wheel can turn. Only a few years back the advice was all varieties should be reduced if not in premium regions, then the mining boom ended, the currency retreated and those with extensive acreage in the Riverland bounced back.

A few years back at Penfolds Kalimna in the Barossa they grubbed out a few acres of Cinsault which should have been kept and recently I note the great Rolf Binder has pulled out an acre or so of Black Frontignac as he did not know what to do with it. And lets not remind ourselves of the vine pull schemes which reduced the acreage of old bush vines which would be now so valuable-the last pull being in the mid 1980s.

Which brings me to this remarkable white which makes me giddy with excitement. How easy will it be to grub it all out-now unwanted. Bone dry with heaps of flavour and for the jaded who have seen it all this is your friend; imagine a dry, prickly, complex, Traminer. Preserve the difference is what we do and to preserve this Fronti, Benjamin took specialist help.
