A Taste of Southern Europe in Your Home
Langdorf 'Kaldukee' Barossa Valley Vermentino 2017
Italy and the islands in the Mediterranean are the home for this variety. I have been tracking Verementino for 30 years and any fault I detected was never been the variety only the winemaking. That cheap white you had on Corsica was likely made from Vermentino.
At Glug we are wary of fads but go a long way out of our way to preserve the difference which I suppose is a fad in our way. High quality drinking enjoyment can only come with a varied diet, so we buy different varieties when they are offered to provide a point of difference. I do not see Viognier and Vermentino ever having wide appeal but are essential for consumers who are looking for that extra dimension when they open a bottle.
A simple observation is how easily we alter what we drink when visiting another country yet how we cling to habits at home. Vermentino is a very easy variety to slip into and shows none of the crazy differences you will discover for example in a Gewürztraminer. Recommended.
