Full Rich With Long Life
Bengalee Barossa Valley Shiraz Mataro 2015
Region: Barossa Valley
I knew the theory and I had tasted a lot of wine containing Mataro but I did not know Mataro when I arrived in the Barossa in 2004. We set up shop at the Rolf Binder winery, and Rolf Binder being one of the great experts on Mataro means I quickly ran up the learning curve.
Directly behind his winery is a 100 year old bush vine vineyard of Mataro and from this have come many significant wines such as a whole sequence of ‘Bulls Blood’. As well a small amount of Mataro finds its way into many of his wines a practise we have continued with at Glug.
This Bengalee is a fine example of why this blend should become a regular part of your drinking. Has lovely oak and with four years of age has now settled down into the long life ahead. High quality drinking when you consider imported reds like basic Cote du Rhone can sell for well over $30.
