Glug 'The Apostle' Barossa Valley Mataro 2015
Region: Barossa Valley, SA
We rank Mataro very highly and have been promoters since we settled in the Barossa Valley. I talk about the heritage varieties of the Barossa these being the varieties which were widely planted before 1880 and the three that stand out are Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro. When I began in retail in 1975 it was hard to obtain 100% Barossa Shiraz with the other two being non-existent though a few barrels were made for private customers (eg Veritas now known as Rolf Binder wines).
When they appeared in the 1980s they were very hard to sell and our large companies lost interest in bottling them as separate varieties. A favourite with Farmer Bros customers was Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro though this also was discontinued due to lack of demand. The, The Apostle, is a specialty of Benjamin and is the contents of a few barrels which have been quietly maturing.
