Exemplary in Preserving What the Barossa Brings Forth
Grandma Raethel Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Region: Barossa Valley
In the early years of making the Grandma we shifted around a lot, for example trying many varieties, as we began our expression of authentic Barossa goodness.
More recently we have settled into presenting the two varieties Cabernet and Shiraz and have dropped the blends. Shiraz dominates the theme of the Barossa Valley but Cabernet also has a right to honours.
While this variety is associated with cooler climates like Coonawarra and Margaret River it has a long history in the Barossa Valley and the oldest Cabernet vines in the world are thought to be those on Penfolds Block 42 planted in early 1890.
I recall an Orlando Barossa Cabernet 1953 which was sensational so the Barossa warmth simply brings out another side of this famous variety.
The wine was made using traditional methods, basket pressed and left in seasoned French oak until bottling in April 2018.
