Restless Farm 'The Elephant' Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2021
The Wine Size is Like the Elephant
Restless Farm 'The Elephant' Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2021

Region:Langhorne Creek, South Australia

This Shiraz will prove to be one of the great Restless wines.

Great vintages happen when everything goes just right such as a long even ripening without stress on the vine and thus the bunches of grapes. The excitement grows that 2021 will be one of the classics and I have my finger crossed that it may equal the 1996.

The two wine regions that I have altered my opinion on of over the last 30 years are Rutherglen and Langhorne Creek and I now rate both much higher than in my youth.

Of course, Wolf Blass with his feats from the 1970s - three Jimmy Watsons with Langhorne Creek fruit - got me thinking though it was a group of specialised studies to do with landscapes that busied me from 1999 till 2013 that profoundly altered my position.

A Shiraz like this I have now come to expect when conditions are perfect and this Restless is a marvellous addition to the Glug portfolio.

Restless Farm 'The Deer' Eden Valley Shiraz 2020
Last of Three Drought Vintages
Restless Farm 'The Deer' Eden Valley Shiraz 2020

Region:Eden Valley, South Australia

The Eden Valley is dryer and higher than the Barossa Valley and as the reds from Henschke show produces a wonderful variant of Barossa Shiraz.

Vintage 2020 was the last of three years of dry conditions and they did it tough up in the Eden Valley as water is scarce.

Benjamin has many contacts in the Eden Valley and was able to acquire a few barrels of Shiraz which were transferred to the Glug winery for further preparation and blending some of which appears as this Restless Farm The Deer.

The Restless wines developed from the 2008 vintage with the help of a McLaren Vale winemaker and are a fruit first style.

Benjamin a decade back took up sports shooting and while deer are a handsome animal introduced from the Northern Hemisphere, they are now a pest across Southern Australia. Elsewhere as well, as I recently read that in Idaho, US they have taken a liking to grapes.

Thus the reference to Deer refers to the many that have taken up residence in the Eden Valley thus adding to the strange array of animals found down on the Restless Farm.

Restless Farm 'The Pig' Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021
For Fans of Barossa Reds Berkshire and Barossa Small Goods
Restless Farm 'The Pig' Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021

Region:Barossa Valley, South Australia

The rabbits are back in the Barossa this year though the Bunny does not suit the farm animal to represent the Barossa. For Barossa Shiraz the only animal down on the farm that makes sense is the Pig and preferably a Berkshire.

Barossa small goods from the famed Nuriootpa butcher Linke’s are a special treat with a heritage reaching as far back as this Shiraz.

Younger and fresher with lower extract is the Restless Farm style though note all our Barossa reds are over 14% abv. If large tasting glasses have one purpose it is to show Barossa Shiraz at its best, as a big splash in those outsized glasses reveals an clinging swirl of oily, deep purple colour that has an origin in only one place.

Drink now and over the next few years and you will be richly rewarded.

Restless Farm 'The Bunny' McLaren Vale Shiraz 2020
Builds on the First Vintage of 2008
Restless Farm 'The Bunny' McLaren Vale Shiraz 2020

Region:McLaren Vale, South Australia

The Restless Farm wines developed from the idea of building a wine range around the fruit of the farm with no use of new oak and less emphasis on extraction and thus the need to soften taste elements like tannins. Perhaps see these wines as, smart, stylish fruit driven, bright and appealing.

The fruit is sourced from the warm climate regions of South Australia with favoured regions being McLaren Vale, Padthaway and Langhorne Creek. We do not think the Restless style is appropriate for cooler regions like the Yarra Valley as this district does not produce the depth of fruit flavour we seek.

We also encourage drinking Restless wines rather than cellaring as while the wines are big and bold when young the emphasis is not on extraction or building a profile for cellaring.

Years ago, I noted a Restless Emu was in the works though it failed the test and was not released. A strange and interesting animal is the Emu but when it will appear is not known. I’ll check this out with Benjamin.
