Best of Breed from South of Adelaide
Colton & Hewett McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
Region:McLaren Vale, South Australia
At Glug we refer to the old mountain range that overlooks Adelaide as the Adelaidean Mount Lofty Range. Sited along its 300-kilometre length are the famous wine regions of South Australia. South of Adelaide is the historic region of McLaren Vale.
Thomas Hardy agrees that the first vineyard was planted by Colton and Hewett who were neighbouring property owners in what is now the town of McLaren Vale, likely around 1840. This predates the first plantings in the Barossa Valley by a few years. The first Colton and Hewett was a Shiraz from 2010 and a steady flow have been released since that time.
McLaren Vale has a high reputation for Cabernet, and in this 2016, a high-quality vintage, the nuances of this variety are explored. The siting of McLaren Vale adjacent to the Gulf and the influences of the Great Southern Ocean creates great complexity in Cabernet.
