Good Vintage A Sleeper
Crayford Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018
Region: Barossa Valley, South Australia
This is the best Crayford Shiraz we have made. The first Crayford was the 2007, a Shiraz Mataro though we have not repeated this blend for many vintages. Crayford is about grape flavours with just a hint of mature oak, meaning the flavours of some barrel storage but not the flavours of new oak, the vanillan oaky-ness that wine writers refer to.
The cooper takes the staves for the barrels and these are bent into shape over a fire. This process creates caramelisation of the wood and imparts a toasty taste to wine when first used. We want none of these tastes in the Crayford, though the tastes picked up in the barrel matured wine is different to that when using a metal container. So this Crayford is the fruit of the Barossa vintage as captured by winemaking, ageing and the bottled. Good vintage and a great wine.
