The Heart And Soul Of The Barossa
Bengalee Barossa Valley Mataro 2018
Region: Barossa Valley, SA
Wanting to make a special heritage red from the Barossa Valley means making wine from one of three varieties; Mataro, Shiraz or Grenache. Each vintage many versions of these three varieties are made to highlight different locations, winery methods, age of vines and multiple other variables.
Varieties such as Mataro have long been recognised by winemakers as being worthy of acting as champions of the Barossa yet the hesitation has come from consumers as they are yet to make the next step which is buying them.
The Veritas-Rolf Binder winery first released the Bulls Blood Mataro in 1955 and continue to be significant supporters of Mataro. We learnt a great deal from Rolf about this wonderful variety in our early years in the Barossa. The first Bengalee Mataro was the 2012.
