Seeking The Holy Grail
- Week Two -

The Second Holy Grail Wednesday

For Wednesday week two of seeking the holy grail I continue the search for good, honest tasty reds which sit under $10. This is the sweet spot for customers. The Glug models are the first Jacobs Creek and Koonunga Hill of the late 1970s and that glorious much later discovery, Yalumba Galway.

Bagot Station
Barossa Valley
Cabernet Merlot 2015
New into the Glug shop is this Cabernet inspired Barossa red. In the great planting boom of the 1980s - early 1990s they also planted Merlot in the Barossa and Gibson wines is the leading maker today.

It’s a useful back-up to the Cabernet and the result is delicious.

Light and Finniss
McLaren Vale
Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

McLaren Vale is our number two hunting ground for premium reds. The melding of coastal temperatures with a touch of the inland heat is the right combination for magical reds.

We pay a little more, but we get a big lift in quality. Drinking reds at this price is where consumers should sit.

The rules of buying wine are many but really, ‘Know thyself my Friend’ is the one to conquer.

The rules of buying wine are many but really, ‘Know thyself my Friend’ is the one to conquer.

I’m posting a series of essays on Facebook about buying budget priced imported wines and the three rules that apply are modified for today’s thought.

1. Determine why the wine should provide value. Does the shop know what they are doing, thus who selected and purchased the wine, then answer why you think it will taste good?

2. The taste you get will come from the climate and weather of the region. Thus if it’s a cool climate region that is the taste to expect. You cannot get the Barossa out of Tasmania.
3. Who made the wine and do they know what they are doing. Normally only large firms can offer budget priced wines. Does this maker regularly offer good value wines? What reason do you have to trust this firm?

I may add that every wine sold on Glug has to answer questions like these and when it does Benjamin releases it.

30 Day Pricing Guarantee:
After buying wine it is most annoying to find it cheaper shortly afterwards. Currently Ben and I find selling on-line most turbulent. To hold our ground I confess to moving prices around far more than usual. Please notify Nicole or Claire of any upsetting price moves and they will then issue a credit.

March Wine Tasting and Sales Event

Wednesday Reds that Taste Good

P.B. Burgoyne
McLaren Vale
Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
This Burgoyne bottling is from McLaren Vale the region the London based Peter Bond Burgoyne first began imported from way back in the 1870s.

Glug revived the brand with a 2006 McLaren Vale Shiraz and I hope somewhere a customer still has a few bottles as I bet it is superb.

Oakley Adams
Langhorne Creek
Shiraz 2016

To find the bargains we look for places with the right climate, low cost of production, and low consumer recognition. Out two top spots in South Australia are Langhorne Creek and the Limestone Coast.

So, I welcome back with pleasure the new bottling of the Oakley Adams Shiraz from a collection of reds Benjamin selected on a recent buying trip.

Princeland Watch
Limestone Coast
Shiraz 2015

Princeland remembers part of our past as this was the proposed name for a new state between Victoria and South Australia.

For Glug customers it is about fabulous value that we find from the vast region that encompasses Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, Padthaway and another dozen or so districts. This is the final bottling.

Exploring the Full Favoured Reds of South Australia No.4

The reds of South Australia are very special. The reason is the geography of the premium vineyard regions means the climate is a balance between cooling and ripening in a way which is not found anywhere else on the globe. The bunches of grapes are pulled towards the coolness of the Great Southern Mega Ocean which slows flavour development, which can alter quickly by the intense, inland, heat flowing in from the baking, red centre.

It is this balance, constantly tilting, which makes complex, intense, interesting flavours which are best referred to as warm flavoured reds. Though a grower in Coonawarra may well disagree. Any-way this is the first mix of a wonderful new selection.

It's All Barossa Valley - 100% Guaranteed No.5

The Australian press, tourist agencies and P.R. companies all agree that the most popular wine region, the most recognised, is the Barossa Valley. The late, great Chef Joel Rubuchon was famous for his mashed potatoes which contained 25% butter. ‘No one who tasted his recipe, made with 25 per cent butter, could forget the experience’. This reads like a proxy for the Barossa Valley, not just a warm climate red but one exploding with 25% more flavour.

Each dozen contains one bottle of the following wines:
Grandma Raethel Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015
Bengalee Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015
Goat Square Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
Crayford Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
Karrawirra Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Kitts Creek Barossa Valley Shiraz Cabernet 2015
Goat Square Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2016
Goat Square Barossa Valley Grenache 2016
Langdorf 'Kaldukee' Barossa Valley Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2012
