Thinking Back To The 1970s

Wines like the two weekend specials simply could not be purchased in the 1970s and 1980s yet they were exactly what my shop customers wanted. Well-made Barossa wines with bags of flavour at sensible day to day prices. It took another 30 years to get there and here they are - $95 a case.

Stonevale Red Barn Bin 671 Winemakers Blend Barossa Valley 2016
About six weeks ago Benjamin purchased a mixed lot of reds from a local boutique winery. When you sell wines at $35 to over $60 a bottle they must be good. In ours hands and with additions from Glug stocks the wines now have a very high value for money rating. The result is a great Barossa bargain.

What Glug offers is wines with taste at agreeable prices though they are, of course, hand selected and bottled by us.

No retailer can be fussy about who they serve, simply take the sale and be polite. I observed the finest French restaurants cared little for dress and made one assessment, can they pay.

The exception. The great McLaren Vale winemaker Geoff Merrill tells a tale of how he and a friend fronted Maxims, Paris, for lunch and the Maître D would not admit them as they did not wear a coat and tie. Hold the table and we will be back. Nearby they found a store that specialised in loud coloured, broad checked, blazers worn with high voltage, very wide ties. Back they went and with a sniff it was ‘this way gentlemen’.
Current wine retailing tells us consumers are very fragmented, and it seems to me like never before customers have become specialised and are seeking out what suits them.

Imagining Glug all dressed up it would not be with loud, checked, blazers nor the sleek tailored look. Perhaps a comfortable country style though one thing is certain you would not note a designer’ logo while, I like to think, viewing Glug as totally original.

30 Day Pricing Guarantee:
After buying wine it is most annoying to find it cheaper shortly afterwards. Currently Ben and I find selling on-line most turbulent. To hold our ground I confess to moving prices around far more than usual. Please notify Nicole or Claire of any upsetting price moves and they will then issue a credit.

Edward Gleeson
Clare Valley
Riesling 2018
Opening prices are always a good deal as rarely are they offered cheaper and this will only happen if I have misjudged sales.

Since I start with low stocks the price looks excellent.

Glug ‘Rotwang’
Barossa Valley
Cabernedro 2016

I like this red a lot and so will you. A great piece of winemaking combines with the ability to take such a small quantity and get it into bottle.

Bit by bit this is transforming the Glug business and to leave the tyranny of big volume brands has me waking up feeling fresh again.

Borderland Estates
‘Flocking Galloots’
Adelaide Hills
Chardonnay 2016

Buy great wines when they are on special, has never been better advice than with the new release of Flocking Galloots.

Cheap in price but not in taste. Modern technology means whites do not age but the price wineries receive decreases quickly and that spells bargain.

'Chapman’s Crossing'
South Australian
Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 (2nd bottling)
None of our bargain bottlings has gained favour so quickly as this Chapmans. To make this wine Benjamin began with a fabulous base of Cabernet and too this he added six other wines.

The Cabernet maintains the structure while the additions add complexity and interest. I’m a fan of this red. Limit of one case per order.

Trial Bin W162
Barossa Valley
Dry White Blend 2018

The tinkering never stops as the winemakers compare notes and ideas. How will this go with that, means you never know till you do it, so they do. Those that make sense move off the lab bench and perhaps a Trial Bin is measured up and made.

I’m all for it as the more variety, once approved of course, the better it is for customers.

Colton & Hewett
McLaren Vale
Cabernet 2014

This fabulous discovery reeks of McLaren Vale Cabernet and will bring great pleasure.

We get as much pleasure out of finding and re-blending wines like this for daily consumption as from making our rare, deeply coloured-opaque, Barossa reds which cost so much more to create. This red gets my vote for daily drinking over the next year.

Exploring the Full Favoured Reds of South Australia No.4

The reds of South Australia are very special. The reason is the geography of the premium vineyard regions means the climate is a balance between cooling and ripening in a way which is not found anywhere else on the globe. The bunches of grapes are pulled towards the coolness of the Great Southern Mega Ocean which slows flavour development, which can alter quickly by the intense, inland, heat flowing in from the baking, red centre.

It is this balance, constantly tilting, which makes complex, intense, interesting flavours which are best referred to as warm flavoured reds. Though a grower in Coonawarra may well disagree. Any-way this is the first mix of a wonderful new selection.

It's All Barossa Valley - 100% Guaranteed No.5

The Australian press, tourist agencies and P.R. companies all agree that the most popular wine region, the most recognised, is the Barossa Valley. The late, great Chef Joel Rubuchon was famous for his mashed potatoes which contained 25% butter. ‘No one who tasted his recipe, made with 25 per cent butter, could forget the experience’. This reads like a proxy for the Barossa Valley, not just a warm climate red but one exploding with 25% more flavour.

Each dozen contains one bottle of the following wines:
Grandma Raethel Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015
Bengalee Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015
Goat Square Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
Crayford Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
Karrawirra Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
