What The Market Says
Australia's Top 100 Wines
Thursday, 7th December, 2006  - David Farmer

Australia’s Top 100 Wines was the headline The Advertiser (Adelaide) gave their November, 2006, review of wines. This is how the wines for the final tasting were chosen. "First, our wine industry panel submitted separate short lists of the best wines they had seen in their liquor shops and restaurants in the past year". Thus the Advertiser reasoned the wines are likely to be available to buy. Then they asked for samples.

The Advertiser decided that judging for a consumer article should be done by those involved in selling wines to the public thus the seven judges forming ‘our wine industry panel’ came from outside the normal show judging circle.

This is a different but commendable idea as those normally asked to judge are heavily weighted to the winemaking fraternity and they have learnt there skills both on the job and being involved in the Australian wine judging circuit.

Without a controlled test I cannot say how variable the results of two panels selected with these different criteria would be.

The final 100 though look pretty good. Our big companies would be unhappy as while they produce 80% of the wine sold they get only about 8% of the recommendations.

So what will it cost to buy one of these wines? On average they are $27.50.
