What Do We Do?

Create Good Cheap Reds and Whites

'The Jackman' Trial Bin South Australia Dry Red Blend No 4 N.V.
Stonevale Wines 'Red Barn' Bin 606 Barossa Valley Winemakers Dry Red Blend 2012

In my many decades of retailing the main request was always for a good, rich, cheap red. Deep colours and a richness of flavor alas cannot be done cheaply though the main occupation at Glug is to see how close we can get. At this point please note we only use natural methods and do not resort to adding high dosages of grape sugar which induces fatness. The two on special are the best we currently have.

Dry Red Blend No 4 N.V.

This little fellow has moved up a division in the fighting stakes and while not a Barossan is beginning to push his weight around. This is the fourth bottling and all are different as Benjamin fiddles. The base is a superb batch of Cabernet and then many additions. Rocketing to fame as a best seller.

Dry Red Blend 2012

Each year we buy many tiny volumes and can make a better wine by blending three or four of these into a commercial parcel which is about 30 cases. This preserves the regional characters and keeps the price modest. Here is the latest Red Barn the last being a 2011 GSM. Limit of one case per order.

Wines are graded in many ways but they all have faults. Remain cautious even sceptical at all times when you buy - not from Glug of course.

Last night I enjoyed a bottle of Ashton Hills Adelaide Hills Reserve Pinot Noir 2016 and very nice it was. This winery cellar door offers a three-tiered price for Pinot Noir as follows:
-Ashton Hills Pinot Noir for $35
-Ashton Hills Estate Pinot Noir for $50
-Ashton Hills reserve Pinot Noir for $70

The winemaker has graded the wines by quality and for customers who have been following my thoughts about wine pricing this example is useful in illustrating how coarse price is to assist your buying. For double the price you will get a few percent improvement in quality and it may well be that the cheaper wine has the most appeal.

What you must not expect is some huge leap in taste which has you yelling-hallelujah.
Another example comes from France with wines from the region of Chablis:
-Petit Chablis
-Chablis
-Premier Cru Chablis
-Grand Cru Chablis

The French are masters at grading everything but it still does not help much. For this region you need to know the vintage which translates to-did the grapes get ripe-and the wine maker. If you are tempted go the whole way and buy a Grand Cru as there are geographical reasons why they are better. The rest are just another of life’s grand wine lotteries and there are better things to do with money.

Put the two examples together and we see how we must tread cautiously.

I hope you enjoy the weekend specials which are priced such that caution is not required.

30 Day Pricing Guarantee:
After buying wine it is most annoying to find it cheaper shortly afterwards. Currently Ben and I find selling on-line most turbulent. To hold our ground I confess to moving prices around far more than usual. Please notify Nicole or Claire of any upsetting price moves and they will then issue a credit.

Wine Merchant Selections Which Save You Heaps

Borderland Estates
‘Flocking Galloots’
Adelaide Hills
Chardonnay 2016

Buy great wines when they are on special, has never been better advice than with the new release of Flocking Galloots. Cheap in price but not in taste. Modern technology means whites do not age but the price wineries receive decreases quickly and that spells bargain.

Barossa Valley
Shiraz 2015

A fortunate purchase early last year has given us a Barossa Shiraz staple for over 12 months. There is a bit left though we are fretting about where the next will come from. Recall we did not make this wine but were lucky to be around when it came up for sale.

Salem Valley
Barossa Valley Semillon
Chardonnay 2016

A delicious blend bringing together the best Barossa white variety in Semillon with the best variety across Australia Chardonnay. A perfect combination which I recall was introduced back in the 1970s. In this case combines complex flavours with tight freshness.

Telegraph Road
South Australia
Classic Dry Red 2013

Creating good reds at a budget price is a specialty of ours. The first Telegraph Road was the 2008 vintage and this still drinks well as the composition of the Telegraph is all about what quality is it possible to achieve for a price. This is a great bargain and is limited to one case per order.

Darby Lane
Adelaide Hills
Chardonnay 2016

Classy whites abound from the Adelaide Hills though at this stage supply is a bit stronger than demand. This makes it a good hunting ground for bargain hunters like Glug and we often find what we want when wineries have ample 2017, tanks full of 2018, meaning its time to shift the 2016s. We quickly put up our hand.

South Australian All Red Selection Series No.3

I put together this mixed dozen to show that under $7 we have a range of hand made, individual reds which for many customers will be all they need. Wines come and go quickly at Glug as making huge amounts and smothering vintage differences is not our way.

The Big Red Mix No.18

This is our longest running mixed dozen because it is the most popular. It provides a balance between expensive varieties and our more general favourites plus provides a saving on buying the dozen bottles separately. A real Glug winner.
