Ultra Value Weekend Winners

Telegraph Road
South Australia
Classic Dry Red 2013

Creating good reds at a budget price is a specialty of ours. The first Telegraph Road was the 2008 vintage and this still drinks well as the composition of the Telegraph is all about what quality is it possible to achieve for a price. This is a great bargain and is limited to one case per order.

Trial Bin 576 South Australia Cabernedro 2013/2016 (Blend No 2)
This wine is winning favour and last weekend we ran out. Benjamin has made another blend.

Trial is way better than average and contains a big slice from the Barossa Valley. Good stuff and again I give a bow to the winemakers.

There is much to enjoy about wine but we can do without the castle of cards.

There is much to like about wine:

- how the taste can be related back to nature, from seeing the grapes ripen on the vines, the vintage harvest festival, while the winery is not unlike an etching made 300 years ago.

- the satisfaction from visiting wine regions which ties neatly the bottle in your hand to the region and its people. Add in that most regions are remarkably picturesque, the food is good, and the conclusion becomes, what could be better.

- then we have the taste in its wonderful diversity with so many paths to follow that other beverages seem one dimensional.

So what could be wrong? Well as it turns out plenty.

- myths about quality and price are set up that create envy when there is nothing to be envious about. If I leave aside a few show pieces the greatest wines you will never drink are at best marginally better than what you can buy down at the local. Most of what you want can be found for $20 which becomes $10 down at Glug.
- the idea that there are superior palates who can score the same wine out of 100 with monotonous regularity is preposterous. Yes there are professionals that you should take guidance from as it does help to learn. For example your pleasure may come from the sugar content and you should be told that the other wine is not sour.

You also need to learn that the wine does not lie as it cannot change and the wild card is yourself with all the mood swings that the wine does not have. Know thyself my friend, as the saying goes.

And finally reflect on this thought; ‘The wines that one remembers are not necessarily the finest that one has tasted, and the highest quality may fail to delight so much as some far more humble beverage drunk in more favourable surroundings..’ A Contemplation of Wine, H.R. Warner Allen, 1951.

30 Day Pricing Guarantee:
After buying wine it is most annoying to find it cheaper shortly afterwards. Currently Ben and I find selling on-line most turbulent. To hold our ground I confess to moving prices around far more than usual. Please notify Nicole or Claire of any upsetting price moves and they will then issue a credit.

Knotts Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2017
This Knotts is a very special Chardonnay with the fineness and gentleness of the flavour coming from free run juice of very high quality. Exceptional and twenty years ago it was thought likely the white Grange, Penfolds Yattarna-would come from the Adelaide Hills.

Borderland Estate Tumbleweed South Australia Classic Dry Red 2013
Good hard core Cabernet forms the base and around this a variety of other varieties add the interest. Please note we do not add grape sugar so it’s not like a McGuigan Red Stripe.

South Australian All Red Selection Series No.1

I put together this mixed dozen to show that under $7 we have a range of hand made, individual reds which for many customers will be all they need. Wines come and go quickly at Glug as making huge amounts and smothering vintage differences is not our way.

The Big Red Mix No.16

This is our longest running mixed dozen because it is the most popular. It provides a balance between expensive varieties and our more general favourites plus provides a saving on buying the dozen bottles separately. A real Glug winner.
