These are the best wines we make plus you save $50 on the price you would pay when buying one at a time. My copy last Friday did not appeal, so I repeat it, because you will drink well. I do not wish to sell heaps as three of the wines have slipped into the rare category of less than five cases. These are the wines I would like to see you drinking and provide good value at $10 each. I have a down to earth approach about wine by asking; where are the specials.

Being a wine writer must be hard. A real journalist can write about global affairs, the economy, politics, or a huge pile up. Lets be frank, not much happens in the world of wine and what is said only helps top up the 'Living section' of a paper.

I still wonder why so much is written about the topic as 99 out of the 100 articles I read fail to mention where I can buy a good drop cheaply. What I see as the prime reason to write about wine is lost to the sniffing and swirling, and homely stories about unremarkable people. I suppose the grubby details of low prices are beneath them.

Stories this week varied from flooded cellars in Houston, U.S. to my favourite about an Australia winery which shows visitors how to roll a balloon glass on the bench and not spill the wine.
'Wine tastings ... are conducted using Reidel rolling taster glasses. As the wine moves across a much greater surface area a greater depth or flavour is revealed, first via the olfactory nerve and then on the palate.' Goodness me, please help us all.

No wonder you took no notice of the Friday offer. I repeat it today as the wines are sensational and at $10 each you are drinking the best we make and they will look good next to others worth $25 and more.

Probably worth getting out those giant balloons when you drink them. Alas one mixed dozen per order.

Barossa Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

I despair at how wine commentators want to create pigeon holes for varieties and wine styles and then rate some up and others down. With Cabernet the swing for the last 30 years has been to place Cabernet in a maritime or cool climate box and proclaim these wines taste the best while some go further to suggest warmer styles are fat and broad.

I like the warmer styles just as much and find the full, ripe, warm flavours of Barossa Cabernet most appealing so much so that we have increased our make of this variety. The best way to understand wines is to see the tastes of all varieties as a continuum from vines grown in a very hot climate to a very cold climate.

Cabernet dates back to the 1880s in the Barossa Valley and were perhaps bottled as such in the 1940s and did appear in the 1950s though have never gained the popularity they deserve. This Langdorf is an outstanding example from the wine making team of Parker and Liebelt.

'St Kitts'
Barossa Valley
Shiraz 2013

Just as great wines show there best as they mature so the best winemakers cannot peak till they develop maturity. Winemaking is a craft where a long apprenticeship is needed though to reach a higher level requires a vision of what it is they wish to make. In my view this vision is best found by understanding the great wines made by previous generations and building from that base.

I see little point in bursting onto the scene with a bold new direction, since what is possible is set by the weather of each vintage and this is captured in the best fruit; thus fashionable or contemporary notions derived from earlier picking, lower alcohols, and lighter, finer styles is not the direction for the Barossa Valley.

This St Kitts is from a small vineyard in the northern Barossa and has been carefully nurtured by Benjamin Parker over many years in mature, small French oak and in this manner departs from other makers by the sparing use of new oak. A year ago we released the Karrawirra Fan Block and the St Kitts has a resemblance to this wine though it took a longer maturation to prove it's worth. The St Kitts is an excellent addition to your cellar. We made 50 cases.

Barossa Valley
Shiraz 2014

What's new to say about Barossa Shiraz? Fortunately quite a lot as Barossa Shiraz is both the beauty and the beast and while you have been happily enjoying the virtues of Barossa reds you may be surprised to find many think this way; 'Fifteen years ago, if anyone asked me to define Australian wine... Barossa shiraz would have been the answer. But the style of Barossa shiraz that rallied back then—jammy, huge, marked by the pungent herbal notes of American oak — is also what brought on a sort of global fatigue with Australia ..and.. just what [should] the Barossa offer the world.

Quite clearly, what it does well now—grow a lot of very ripe and uninteresting shiraz and cabernet, much of it going to Australia’s wine conglomerates — is neither sustainable nor particularly relevant as tastes evolve.

So there you have it, though I serenely sail on and with bold confidence recommend Parkers new Bengalee. As the great Len Evans would have said to the writer, 'I'm glad you do not like the wine as it means more for me.'

Oakley Adams
Shiraz 2014

An exceptional region for grapes lies in the far, south east corner of South Australia. The most famous region is Coonawarra where vines date to the 1890s.

In 1964 they planted similar land to Coonawarra at Padthaway, about 100 kilometres north west. For a time the large companies Lindemans, Seppelts and Hardys promoted a range of wines labelled as Padthaway, such was the importance attached to the region. Getting buyers familiar with a new region is very hard and later they retreated.

So the vines have matured, the grapes are beautiful and the resulting wine is now blended into many regular brands to boost the quality. Thus brilliant parcels of wine can be purchased at medium to low prices. Padthaway ranks with Langhorne Creek as our favourite regions for exceptional value for money.

This Oakley Adams is such an example and is a wine for smart wine buyers. Incidentally I developed the label concept of Oakley Adams in 1996 and its good to see it back on bottles.

P.B. Burgoyne
Barossa Valley
Shiraz 2015

I have to go back to 2012 to find the last time we sold a Barossa Valley Shiraz of this quality at this price. Indeed this Burgoyne is all we like and look for in a wine. The origin is the most sought after region in Australia - the Barossa Valley, the grapes were grown by well known farmers, the wine maker Benjamin Parker prepared the wine for bottling which is a critical job and we supervised the bottling locally.

The wine was not made by us but on the bench against comparable samples this wine stood out as a grade above the others the and as you do we pulled the sample forward. The transaction was done and here it is released under the wine-merchant label of P.B. Burgoyne.

Burgoyne commenced business in 1871 as a UK importer of Australian wines and strode like a colossus across our landscape. We hope he is pleased with our efforts and I am certain customers will be.

At this introductory price this should become the bread and butter red yet with the knowledge you are drinking a very high grade. This is what we are good at and is very close to our ideal of vineyard, grower, maker.

Barossa Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

I’m not a believer in the idea that each grape variety reaches an ideal of perfection within a narrow, climate-weather range. Rather I see a broad range of equal flavours and this best suites our varied tastes. I refer to the view that a cool, maritime climate brings out the best in Cabernet Sauvignon, a definition to narrow for me.

I have enjoyed the wide range Lakes Folly Cabernets, the best of the Clare Valley and the Barossa Valley and take the view the more variety the better, from warm or cool regions. Of course you will enjoy Bordeaux, Coonawarra, and Margaret River but I have no doubt that a Barossa Valley Cabernet is also a great wine.

I have fond memories of Penfolds Barossa Cabernets, those from the Wolf Blass premium colour range, and mature Orlando Barossa Cabernets from the 1950s. Thus when given the chance to take a few tonnes of Cabernet from 2015 we leapt at the opportunity to increase our holdings.

The result is this fabulous wine, plush and fruity and dripping with intense flavours-how can you go wrong.

To display some of our new wines the Big Red Mix rolls over to No 13. The highlights are many but the Village Belle Mourvedre will thrill as will the Crayford Shiraz which is a blockbuster Barossa. However as we love our Grenache the best wine is likely the Hope Farm Grenache. The joy of buying a mixed dozen is keeping up with what we do and concentrating on what is in each bottle plus the price is attractive.
