Stockwell Creek 'Reserve' Barossa Valley Mataro 2012
Region: Barossa Valley, SA
The Stockwell Reserve is a gorgeous wine from a single vineyard of 40 year old bush vines on Belvidere Road in the northern Barossa.
A few months back I talked to four of the best Barossa winemakers about Mataro. What I was told was summed up best by Rolf Binder, 'it's an intellectual variety'. I discovered reasons why this remarkable variety was forgotten and you can read about this on Glug.
As often mentioned the best wines are made in small volumes and we only bottled 55 dozen of this wine after it had spent 20 months maturing in puncheons. My notes show that before oak we had left the wine on skins for 18 days after fermentation, a risky but rewarding procedure which large companies would never contemplate.
Of all the Mataro's we sell this Stockwell best displays the wonderful characters of this variety; the 'Chinese spices' of Tim Smith, the 'slippery tannins' of Rolf Binder, the 'nuts and spices' of Kym Teusner and the 'delicacy and fragrance' of Pete Schell.
