Flavour from the High Country
Darby Lane Adelaide Hills Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Region: Adelaide Hills
The last Darby Lane Merlot we sold 18 months ago won wide favour so we kept a look out for another. Early this year luck came our way and we found what we wanted in a neighbours Barossa winery.
Ben Parker did the preparation of the wine though he was helped by a winemaking colleague Phil Lehmann. The Adelaide Hills wine region covers a wide area with vineyard heights varying from 350 metres to well over 600 metres.
This region is the South Australian home for cool climate viticulture and wine making. Some grapes like Sauvignon Blanc perform poorly in warm regions whereas others like Merlot and Cabernet express different flavours when grown at higher and cooler altitudes.
Sourcing wines from a wide spectrum of climates gives consumers a wider variety to choose from although you do need a bit of knowledge when purchasing wines to understand what these differences will do to the flavours.
