Golden Scrumpy Barossa Cider Bottle Fermented 2012 (Franz) 5 x 500ml bottles
This cider is made in the Barossa Valley by David Franz, from Barossa fruit. It is different because it is made just as you would a bottle fermented sparkling wine and after spending seven months on lees was disgorged and freshly dosaged in mid October.
I found it a fabulous drink and might be just what you need this season both for simple gifts and having something special around the house.
David used Golden Delicious apples from an orchard just on the outskirts of Angaston which is on the border of the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. In days gone by Angaston and companies such as Yalumba were large producers of apples and stone fruits and there were several canning operations. And I wonder if David was inspired by his father Peter Lehmann who in the mid 1950s made a sensational apple wine which as it aged came to taste like a beautiful, mature riesling. It was often brought out to fool smug wine judges.
An exceptional sparkling cider with 2200 bottles produced.
