The Harem 'Sultan' Barossa Valley Mataro 2009
Region: Barossa Valley, SA
This is a great wine made by a brilliant winemaker and is for those drinkers who like to approach their wines with a sense of wonder, probably with one of those enormous glasses, perfect for swirling, as in that way the mysteries of this wine will unfold.
Mataro is one of the small number of varieties which blossoms forth only when grown in the right environment and it has found its home in the Barossa Valley.
It is argued and in our view correctly, that several varieties, and two readily come to mind, pinot noir and sauvignon blanc show their best only in a cool to cold climate. The flip-side is also true and grenache and mataro open out beautifully in warm to hot climates; mataro almost at the extreme edge.
At last we can show you a definitive example. The Sultan is a wonderful wine and it gives us pleasure to recommend.
