Mount Eagle Eden Valley Shiraz 2013
Region: Eden Valley, SA
The greatest of the South Australian winemakers was Max Schubert, the inventor of Grange. I am fortunate to have had many discussions with Schubert and recall that he had a great love for the wines of Eden Valley. Eden Valley is a rolling plateau that is 200 metres higher and lies to the east and south of the Barossa Valley.
With a combination of Barossa warmth and altitude the wine flavours are exceptional and the winemaker Benjamin Parker grabs what fruit and wine he can from this region. To the west of Eden Valley is the region of Adelaide Hills which is cooler and wetter and to keep your drinking choices interesting you need to be familiar with both regions. In general the Adelaide Hills flavours are a bit more specialised than the Eden Valley and since warmth and flavour appeals to us you will find much to enjoy in the Mt Eagle.
I am also comfortable about recommending the wine for cellaring should you be so inclined. Indeed it would be interesting in 10 years to compare the Mt Eagle to wines from the elevated regions of Victoria such as the Grampians, Heathcote or even Beechworth. All up an excellent wine with a high value for money rating.
