Excellent Vintage for this Ripe Sappy Style
Langdorf Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2012
Region: Barossa Valley, SA
The key to this blend is the quality of the Grenache which does dance around from vintage to vintage. This Langdorf is the equal in quality of the newly released Harem Layla. What makes them different is that many of the base wines were made by other wine makers. Watching vintages slide past has made me much more aware of what a wine maker sees, as the mood of each variety vary with the vintage.
To make this blend work requires the Grenache to have a fresh vibrancy with complex fruit characters so a normal vintage is best. Years like 2008 and 2009 had very hot periods and while Grenache makes large sturdy wines they lose that sappy, fresh tasting appeal we want in our GSM's. I was reminiscing the other day about the wonderful 2005 GSM's we made and these have been created again in the 2012's.
