Hope Farm McLaren Vale Mataro 2010
Region: McLaren Vale, SA
Fifty years ago Australians moved from the dark ages and began drinking table wine. Progress has been impressive but we still have much to do as two features continue to worry me about our approach to wine drinking. We are very insular and this shows up in being unsure about what a wine is worth; and secondly an approach to drinking which is safe and boring and is expressed by a great slowness to embrace new varieties.
What then are we to do with mataro which came out to the colony of NSW with Busby's private collection of vine cuttings in 1833 and from there found its way to the new settlement of South Australia, perhaps as early as the first vines were planted and certainly by 1838. For many readers this may be the first 100% McLaren Vale mataro you have ever seen or had the chance to buy.
Well you will not be disappointed as I rate this wine very highly and is part of a fortuitous purchase we made from the Tinlins Winery back in 2011.
