We have been down in the Barossa for a number of years now and see very clearly how the region is made up of different sub-regions.

Cabernets from McLaren Vale have over the last few years been winning many gold medals and trophies at our Royal State Wine Shows much to the embarrassment of those, like us, who see the area as first and foremost a shiraz region.

This wine is from a smallish Northern Barossa area around Kalimna which can be loosely called 'Grange country' after the famous wine.

The fruit source was Stuart Woodman’s vineyard at Springton. The cropping level was about three tonnes per acre with the vines now being about 30 years old. The wine was aged in seasoned oak for 18 months.

When I moved to the Barossa in 2005 one of those I quickly looked up was Colin Forbes who over decades has made a number of enticing rieslings from the Eden Valley. I found him at his new venture Poverty Hill which I was assured pretty well summed up the outlook.

This wine is a blend of two neighbouring cabernet vineyards in the central region of the Barossa – between Tanunda and Nuriootpa. The growers, the Hahn family are as blue blood Barossa as is possible to be as they arrived in the Barossa in 1846 and members of the family have lived in the house they built in 1848 ever since.

Region: McLaren Vale, SA
This cabernet is very cheap for the quality and depth of flavour it delivers. Like the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale is most famous for its expression of shiraz but what you may not know is that over the last few years it has been awarded more major Trophies for cabernet, including a recent Jimmy Watson than for shiraz.
