Glug has a Great Fondness for Langhorne Creek
Auld & Burton Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2009
Region: Langhorne Creek, SA
Of the four great red wine regions of the Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia; The Barossa, Clare, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek, by far the best bargains come from Langhorne Creek. We constantly hunt there for that 'extra' full rich quality which gives us the most taste value for our dollar. The reason why they are cheaper and the problem of course is the wines are harder to sell as the district does not have a premium image.
While vines date back to 1859 the rise of Langhorne Creek as a premium red wine region dates to the 1970s. The wine flavours of Langhorne Creek are greatly influenced by the close proximity to Lake Alexandrina and the climatic influences that flow up from the Southern Ocean, 30 kilometres to the south. The district deserves re-rating and in time will become famous for rich, full bodied wines made from Shiraz and Cabernet.
