Facts About Marlboro Man and Marlborough
Wednesday, 18th November, 2009
- David Farmer
We recently drew your attention, First Cat's Pee and Now the Taste of Cigarettes, to wine drinkers who when asked what they thought about Marlborough replied cigarettes.
Further research tells me that Marlboro Man initially had nothing to do with cowboys. Philip Morris opened a cigarette shop in Bond Street in 1847. The American distributor registered Philip Morris in New York in 1902 and the Marlboro brand was introduced in 1924. Marlboro was named after the original Philip Morris factory that was in Great Marlborough Street, London. Being wine people we are more interested in the Marlborough family and Blenheim so at least we are back in New Zealand.
