The Great South East

Let the Truth be Told

Bargains from the
Great South East of SA

The best line-up of high quality reds at low prices I have tasted since we called the Barossa home, 14 years ago.
The truth is the wines of the Great South East of South Australia are undervalued.

When more premium wine is made than can readily be sold the prices drop.

When this is true you move a step closer to the saying ‘you can have your cake and eat it too’. O.K. not quite but when the bottle is empty you have saved a lot.

One such under-priced region is the Great South East of South Australia and here are our selections.

Embrace the Great South-East

Glug 'Reds of the Great South East' Mix

Contains a mix of the following wines:-

Oakley Adams Padthaway Shiraz 2014
New Premium Region Special Red
Oakley Adams Padthaway Shiraz 2014

Region: Padthaway, SA

An exceptional region for grapes lies in the far, south east corner of South Australia.

The most famous region is Coonawarra where vines date to the 1890s. In 1964 they planted similar land to Coonawarra at Padthaway, about 100 kilometres North West. For a time the large companies Lindemans, Seppelts and Hardys promoted a range of wines labelled as Padthaway, such was the importance attached to the region.

Getting buyers familiar with a new region is very hard and later they retreated. So the vines have matured, the grapes are beautiful and the resulting wine is now blended into many regular brands to boost the quality. Thus brilliant parcels of wine can be purchased at medium to low prices. Padthaway ranks with Langhorne Creek as our favourite regions for exceptional value for money.

This Oakley Adams is such an example and is a wine for smart wine buyers. Incidentally I developed the label concept of Oakley Adams in 1996 and its good to see it back on bottles.

William W Vineyards 'The Fruit Colony' Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Dazzling Display of Coonawarra Length
William W Vineyards 'The Fruit Colony' Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Region: Coonawarra, SA

The Fruit Colony is the 'Eighth of Ten' of our 10th Anniversary Celebration new releases. And what a wine it is. We discovered this wine some time ago and after purchase returned it to oak for another 12 months.

We are wary of oak as we like to display freshness and fruit though another important factor is the cost. Any purchase has to promise a lot to go into Glug barrels.

This year we have expanded our range across the 'Limestone Coast' and have a couple more releases on the way.

The cooler, maritime influence on the vineyards from Robe, Coonawarra and Wrattonbully produce a different expression of Cabernet than those of warmer regions like the Barossa. Coonawarra is justly famous for Cabernet though we find prices are far from buoyant meaning this very fine wine is priced to sell.

P. B. Burgoyne Limestone Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Maritime Cool But We Like Them Rich
P. B. Burgoyne Limestone Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Region: Limestone Coast, SA

When we search for good bulk reds at value prices we start in regions that are less known which means they produce far more supply than is in demand for that region's name. The region called the Limestone Coast is a huge area in the South East corner of South Australia which abuts the Victorian border.

There are vineyards from Bordertown to Mount Gambier and west across to Robe with outposts like Lucindale. We know this country very well and it's one of our favourite regions as the grape quality is high, since it is cool maritime, yet prices sit below fair on our value for money gauge.

Enter this wonderful Burgoyne Cabernet discovered by the winemakers. So what does it taste like? Frankly I cannot tell the difference between this Burgoyne and a similar wine from Coonawarra so you may as well pocket the difference.

Princeland Watch Limestone Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Ripe Complex Flavours Small Price
Princeland Watch Limestone Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Region: Limestone Coast, SA

The south-eastern corner of South Australia is known as the Limestone Coast. It extends from the Victorian border west to the mouth of the Murray River. I know the country well and the beaches on a warm, gentle day are paradise. Mostly though the winds from the great mega Southern Ocean sweep this country and lets just say it is bracing.

The attraction for vineyards is this cooling aspect and a range of interesting wines come from Robe-Mount Benson, Mount Gambier and more famous regions like Coonawarra and Padthaway.

We find very good value in the reds offered from this region and these we hold in mature oak and when stocks have built make a blend which is released under the Princeland brand. We have been pleased with our last few releases and again strongly recommend the 2015 as you get a lot of complex flavours for a modest price.

Cameron Country Red Post Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Second Bottling Released
Cameron Country Red Post Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Region: Coonawarra, SA

This is the second bottling of the Red Post, released November 2015. The difference of course is an extra 12 months in a range of mature oak. It shows as the complexion has moved from fruit first to fruit second, and it now sits behind a more complex palate impression of savoury, secondary characters; less the tantalising flavours of freshness and more of a build-up of aromas and flavours produced by gentle, slow ageing in oak.

This is what I have been saying. "In my youthful days I thought of Coonawarra as the Bordeaux of the southern hemisphere. There are similarities but I have a more nuanced view these days. Same grape, similar climate but the heat of our far warmer inland pushes south and makes for a fuller, riper style.

I see all wine regions as unique as it's impossible to exactly duplicate the same set of conditions which exists on another part of the globe. You do though get bands of similarity and this Coonawarra has the noticeable, firmer grip of cool climate Cabernet
".

Restless Farm 'The Camel' Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Exceptional Value from Coonawarra
Restless Farm 'The Camel' Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Region: Coonawarra, SA

The Restless Farm series of wines date back to the first release in 2008 which was a Goat Padthaway Shiraz as we were well aware that possible the finest value reds in Australia could be sourced from the Limnestone Coast of South Australia.

The animals that live down on the Farm come and go depending upon the wines which the winemakers discover. All of the animals live happily together and there is nothing unusual in a Camel finding it way to the Restless Farm.

I can report seeing wild camels in Central Australia and because of their size it’s a bit alarming when you stumble over a group as they are not happy you are in their territory.

The winemakers tell me they relate each wine to the Restless animal selected though only they can explain the affinity of this very classy Coonawarra Cabernet with a Camel.

Is the red soil of Coonawarra a reminder of the central Australian desert, or does the size of the Camel mean it’s a grand red; only they can say and finally any interpretation is best left to the drinker.
