The Amazing 'Golden Scrumpy' Cider of David Franz

David Franz Golden Scrumpy Lightly Sparkling Grape and Apple Cider 330mL 6 Pack

Being a Tasmanian I know a lot more about apples than the average person. Indeed a family ritual was to pick apples once a year at the 'Waltons' property in Huonville. It was also natural to ask for a glass of cider in a pub in Tassie. Awhile back I wrote about my attempts to understand English cider in London and the West Country; . Click here.
A year ago David Franz an enterprising Barossa winemaker asked us to pop over and taste his latest batch of 'Golden Scrumpy' cider. Ben and I arrived to find the crew were well into the 'disgorgement', dosage and packing the cider for sale. I quite like sitting back and drinking a nice product while watching others work-which is what we did.
And I wonder if David was inspired by his father Peter Lehmann who in the mid 1950s made a sensational apple wine which as it aged came to taste like a beautiful, mature Riesling. It was often brought out to fool smug wine judges.
We highlight this product because it is an outstanding artisanal cider made from local Barossa Valley fruit. I think it will have wide appeal, particularly for friends dropping by who only want a single glass of something different.
