Expresses Strength and Depth
Harem 'Fatima' Barossa Grenache Mataro 2012
Region: Barossa, SA
Ben got a lot of pleasure from taking the initial building blocks and assembling them on the tasting bench to make the final 'Fatima' blend. The 'Layla' style of Grenache appeals to me and I am thrilled with the result, whereas the 'Fatima' is a deep rich, Rhone style which will last.
Like every variety, Grenache comes in many guises and for 'Layla' we want perfume and softness which opens quickly in the glass. 'Fatima' is a different expression of Grenache and needs pouring into a decanter before drinking so it can build and build and that takes time. As growers will explain, different vineyards of Grenache express different parts of the Grenache spectrum though there is likely to be clonal differences as well. Also winemakers approach the making in different ways so you need many parts to assemble the final wine.
Vintage 2012 will be remembered for making one of the best ever 'Fatima's'.
