Decades of Blending Trials Make Better Wine
Hope Farm McLaren Vale Grenache Shiraz 2013
Region: McLaren Vale, SA
Ben worked with Nicholas Bourke on this wine. A wonderful parcel of Grenache had been isolated which had a wide range of interesting aromas and a fragrant and delicious palate. The flavour though was not strong enough and the aftertaste was short.
There now exists decades of history which show that adding Shiraz to Grenache can make a more interesting wine so blending trials began. We do not like adding Shiraz from another region as we want to keep the character of McLaren Vale. Also some Shiraz works in the blend better than others, such is the mysterious alchemy of wine. After finding the Shiraz that best suited this Grenache the amount added was slowly increased with each step being assessed. As the amount of Shiraz increased I became increasingly nervous as I do not like the Grenache character being suppressed too much. Still you must show faith and they decided the addition of 42% of Shiraz was ideal.
