Bright Deep Colour Red Country
Cameron Country 'Red Post' Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Region: Coonawarra, SA
Stretching eastward from Margaret River to Mornington Peninsula and further east to Mallacoota and the N.S.W. border are what I term the vineyards of the Southern Coastline. The flavours are influenced by the coolness of the Great Southern Ocean inter-acting with the heat of the land.
Of the many regions now recognised Coonawarra was the undisputed champion until well into the 1990s. Now it is rivalled by Margaret River, the great Southern of WA and regions east like the Yarra Valley. Of course long-established vineyards and a depth of wine making talent means when the vintage is good the wines are world class. In my youthful days I thought of Coonawarra as the Bordeaux of the southern hemisphere.
There are similarities but I have a more nuanced view these days as the maritime climates are not the same. The heat of our warmer inland pushes south and makes for a fuller, riper style.
Now I see all wine regions as unique as it’s impossible to exactly duplicate the same set of conditions which exists on another part of the globe. You do though get bands of similarity and this Coonawarra has the noticeable, firmer grip of cool climate Cabernet.
