Seventh Release of Grandma Raethel
Grandma Raethel Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Region: Barossa Valley
Shiraz dominates the theme of the Barossa Valley and tows along two other varieties which also express the bountiful warmth of the Barossa; Grenache and Mataro. Cabernet Sauvignon comes from another direction being associated with cooler climates like Coonawarra and Margaret River though the variety has a long history in the Barossa Valley and the oldest Cabernet vines in the world are thought to be those on Penfolds Block 42 planted in early 1890. I recall an Orlando Barossa Cabernet 1953 which was sensational so the Barossa warmth simply brings out another side of this famous variety.
The Grandma Raethel Cabernet is a blend from two northern Barossa Valley vineyards with 60% from the B & S Block beside the track to Ebenezer and 40% from the Dorrien block of Matchoss. The wine was made using traditional methods, basket pressed and left in seasoned French oak until bottling in mid-2016.
