Full Rich and Savoury
Fareham Estate Clare Valley Shiraz 2012
Region: Clare Valley, SA
I went to buy McLaren Vale shiraz at a winery in McLaren Vale and walked away with this wonderful wine from Clare. Most wineries are like that, having a confusing outer layer of activity, such as making wines for friends or taking over a task when a grower has been let down. This means they accumulate many unexpected wines which 'don't belong'.
Since we have been short of Clare reds for the last two years it is a welcome addition to our list. Between the Barossa and Clare there are few vineyards and this low lying stretch of rolling country is used for grain.
Then at Clare the distinctive rocks of the Mount Lofty Range again lift up to create the unexpected vineyard country of Clare. It is warm like the Barossa but grows wonderful riesling meaning there is a chill to the air and thus the reds are big and firm but also have delicate floral aroma and less throttle on the palate with a bit more palate length.
