Auld & Burton Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Region: Langhorne Creek, SA

Our exploration of the greatness of Langhorne Creek expands with this addition to our portfolio. I no longer think of vineyard regions as that restricts seeing a bigger picture but for the record the region has about 6000 hectares planted, which is a fabulous resource. It is apparent then that a lot of this wine is propping up numerous, big, multi-regional brands while few of us could identify a single Langhorne Creek wine.

The oldest vines date back the 1890s and these are the Metala vineyards. Climatically a very favourable sweep of country extends south from Murray Bridge, along the western side of the Murray River, to its mouth at the Coorong.

There are intermittent plantings which expand greatly at Langhorne Creek, stop and then expand again at Currency Creek. Plantings are on the flatter ground near the shore of Lake Alexandrina. The wines are richer and sweeter than those of McLaren Vale and do not have the cooler characters you would associate with Coonawarra. Fullness and density is what you get which is what Glug likes to sell.
