Auld & Burton Barossa Valley Shiraz Cabernet 2011
From a Small Family Vineyard near Nuriootpa
Auld & Burton Barossa Valley Shiraz Cabernet 2011

Region: Barossa Valley, SA

We purchased this wine from a family which own a small vineyard in the Barossa heartland north-east of the town of Nuriootpa. The husband is the senior red wine winemaker with a large company and like many in the valley they wish to establish a niche brand. At the time Ben was doing many blending experiments with Cabernet and Shiraz though he quickly made the decision to retain the difference of the vineyard site by simply blending the Shiraz with the Cabernet. I might add the amounts were tiny and a better wine has resulted. Auld and Burton purchased similar wines from vineyards on the eastern slopes of Adelaide and McLaren Vale for the English market and were still in business in the 1950s. I like the result of this Barossa red and it displays the wine merchant approach of Glug.

In mid to late 2013 Ben and a winemaking chum began a series of blending trials around the two varieties Cabernet and Shiraz. Ben had made a few fortuitous purchases plus there were multiple, individual lots from the wines we had made to provide numerous blending options. The blending of these varieties has a long Australian tradition though our view is the best results come when like is blended with like, and by this I mean warm climate varieties together give a better result than a blend of wines from cold and warm climates. Others, of course, will disagree.

What we wished to do was produce multiple options for our customers so the drinking choices covered as wide a flavour spectrum as possible. One of these trials was bottled as Auld and Burton, the second of the historic wine merchants we have revived. They opened premises in London in 1871, after planting vines on the slopes above Adelaide. They were active agents for Australian wines in the U.K. until the 1950s.
