Where Do I Get The Best Value Shiraz In S.A.
Auld & Burton Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2016
Region: Langhorne Creek, SA
Three Jimmy Watson winners in succession, in the mid 1970s, made by Wolf Blass from 100% Langhorne Creek fruit, signalled very clearly that this region was greatly underestimated. This inspired big companies in expansion mode to plant many new vineyards, and later the back-bone of many lower priced, agreeable reds was partly wine from Langhorne Creek.
The region though never became known for premium reds, other than those made by Wolf Blass. Many of us in retail tried with other brands but could not get customers interested. The oldest company Bleasdale, dating to 1859, never won favour.
These days Langhorne Creek gets a more positive response from customers to which I say, about time. Because of the large plantings dating back to those Wolf Blass inspired days, quality grapes are far cheaper than the Barossa Valley and this makes it a hunting ground for Glug which finds many bargains.
